Bed Bugs

Bed bugs travel with guests, in their luggage and other belongings, these “Unwelcomed Guests” travel from lodging to lodging spreading trouble all along the way. The only way to prevent bed bugs is to stop renting rooms. Unless you have figured out how to turn a profit without renting guest rooms, there is no way to prevent the introduction of bed bugs to your hotel. There are pest control companies though, that sell “bed bug prevention” programs. They are, frankly, smoke and mirrors programs. They maybugs1 include inspections, “preventive” treatments, gadgets that trap bed bugs or some other gimmick. These programs typically charge you a monthly fee for bed bug “prevention”. They know their “prevention” will fail because there is no way to prevent bed bugs from being introduced on a future guest. An inspection or treatment today may show a room clear of bed bugs and tomorrow’s guest may introduce a new infestation! Bed bug “prevention” programs cost you enough though, that when your guests discover bed bugs in a room the pest control company can treat them for free, as part of their guarantee. It is simply a way of getting you to pay for service on a monthly basis that you may, or may not need. Their programs are nothing more than great marketing. If you are looking for an inclusive pest control program that includes the cost of bed bugs at one flat rate, you may very well be happy with this arrangement. If you are looking for a program that actually prevents bed bugs, don’t waste your money.

There is no preventive fix for bed bugs available in today’s pest control industry. If there were, believe me, we would be selling it. As soon as there is, we’ll be the first to tell you about it.
Even though bed bugs can not be prevented from showing up in your facility, the damage they cause can be greatly reduced. The key to mitigating bed bug damage is early detection! If a bed bug infestation can be caught early, by hotel staff instead of the guest, there are many obvious benefits. Early infestations are smaller, easier to eliminate and often require less room down time to solve. Early detection puts you in the driver’s seat, dealing with a problem in a proactive manner, making decisions at your own pace, without an angry guest dictating the pace and direction of your actions. Importantly, early detection may very well prevent significant guest interaction with bed bugs and lower potential for legal action. At the very least, an on site early detection program provides evidence that you are making reasonable efforts to protect your guests from bed bugs, in case you do end up in the midst of legal action.

The Unwelcomed Guest bed bug training video provides you a quick, inexpensive and realistic tool to implement an early detection program. Designed for your housekeeping and engineering staff, it provides the basics needed to inspect a room for bed bugs and identify potential bed bug infestations.
