One of the easiest, fastest ways to update your look is by investing in a new pair of eye glasses. With 57% of the American population using some type of eyewear (I’m guessing other modern countries have similar numbers), it’s easy to see who’s kept current and who hasn’t when it comes to eyewear: the large, 1980’s style of specs are “out”; the smaller vintage and geometrics styles are “in”.
If you don’t have a lot of money to spend on a new wardrobe, or if you’ve gotten so used to seeing yourself in your current frames that you haven’t given the matter any attention in a while, now’s a good time to review your options. eye glasses-like hairstyles-can date you instantly, so this is one area that requires occasional review.
First, A Little Background.
Did you know that reading glasses first appeared in Italy in the 1260’s? Designed to “help the elderly to read,” these were a godsend to those whose vision had become blurred due to age. Their popularity was instantaneous, and paintings from the time began to depict wearers in both religious and scholarly settings.
But the initial design had a huge problem: with only the bare basics of lenses and a nose bridge, there was no easy way to keep the darn things from slipping down the nose. You had to hold them in place, which limited their use. The Spaniards tried connecting them to ribbons looped around the ears, but that never really caught on. In fact, it wasn’t until 1730-nearly 500 years after they were first introduced-that a London optician named Edward Scarlett finally devised the rigid sidepieces that rest atop the ears. The perfection spread rapidly, and is still in use today.
Benjamin Franklin is often credited with inventing eye glasses, but in fact he was the one who developed the bifocal lens in the 1780’s, because he got tired of changing to reading glasses whenever he opened a book, which was often. He had his optician cut the lenses in two so he just had to look up and down instead of switching glasses. This is another revision that’s still in use today.
So what’s the difference between eye glasses and spectacles? Today the terms are used interchangeably, but at the turn of the last century, there was a clear demarcation: “eye glasses” was the term used to describe eyewear with no sidebar, while “spectacles” referred to frames with sidebars.
Popular among the elite for over a hundred years, “temporary” sight aids like eye glasses, the monocle (single round glass); and the lorgnette (a style held up to the eyes with a long handle which was widely used by elegant women), came and went because of one simple factor: vanity. One simply did not admit that one could not see unassisted in public. These vision aids were designed to be pulled out and put away quickly, yet still maintain some semblance of style for the few minutes they were in use.
While the English and French in particular were very rigid in their opinion that eye glasses only be worn in private, the Spaniards believed that glasses made them look more important and dignified and they quickly became a popular accessory among all the classes. In fact, Spanish paintings from the Middle Ages show Moses, Jesus, and other biblical figures wearing glasses, to give them an added air of dignity.
But the Spanish were in the minority. The stigma of wearing spectacles lasted well into the 20th century. While Dorothy Parker proclaimed, “Men don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses,” in 1926, Marilyn Monroe’s character Pola Debevoise preferred walking into walls to being seen in glasses in the 1953 movie “How To Marry a Millionaire.”
Contact lenses quickly earned their way as the discreet eye aid of choice when a New York optometrist named William Feinbloom made the lenses out of plastic in 1936 and they finally became comfortable to wear.
First conceived and sketched by Leonardo da Vinci in 1508 (big surprise), contact lens technology did not begin to come together until 1827, when English astronomer Sir John Herschel suggested grinding a contact lens to conform exactly to the eye’s surface. A German glassblower named F. E. Muller produced the first eye covering designed to be seen through and tolerated in 1887, and within a year, both a Swiss physician and a French optician reported using contacts to correct optical defects. Still, until the method for taking molds from living eyes was perfected in 1929, contacts were uncomfortable and consequently, unpopular.
So when did sunglasses make a splash? In 1929, when Sam Foster convinced a Woolworth store on the Atlantic City Boardwalk to sell his Foster Grants. They became popular in the 1930’s when movie stars started to wear them.

Brain Health: 11 Ideas to Keep in Mind
Those episodes of forgetfulness–the name you can’t recall, the missing keys, the quart of milk you didn’t buy–loom larger as you pass your fiftieth birthday.
The brain does change with age. Gradually, it begins to process information more slowly. You don’t learn and retain new facts as well as you used to, and it takes longer to summon things out of the memory bank. This can be unsettling, but it is quite normal and does not usually signal the onset of disease.brain1
Research has consistently found that staying physically active is a key to preserving brain function. Studies have shown that older people who get regular exercise are less likely to decline mentally and/or develop dementia.
Mental Activity and Lifelong Learning
Use it or lose it: the old adage also applies to mental ability. Read, take a class, work a puzzle, pursue an absorbing hobby–whatever makes you think. Exercising the brain can enrich your life, banish boredom, help treat depression, confer a sense of accomplishment, and be a way to make new friends–all good for mental health.
Controlling Blood Pressure
Untreated hypertension can increase the risk of cognitive decline as well as dementia. Lowering high blood pressure is almost certainly as good for the brain as for the heart–whether you control your blood pressure by diet, exercise, and weight loss, or by taking medication.
Preventing/Controlling Diabetes
The evidence that Type 2 diabetes (and possibly even prediabetes) increases the risk of cognitive decline and dementia is strong. This may be because diabetes damages blood vessels, including those in the brain. Also, the high levels of insulin characteristic of Type 2 diabetes appear to go along with declining memory.
Weight Control
Obesity, especially in the abdomen, has been linked to an increased risk of dementia. Since obesity often goes along with other factors that can increase dementia risk–such as diabetes, hypertension, and lack of physical activity–it is hard to know which is the main culprit.
Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs
Despite some anecdotal reports that statin drugs may increase memory loss in some people, studies over the years have not found a link. In fact, some research suggests that statins reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. High blood cholesterol may contribute to the brain plaques typical of Alzheimer’s. People taking cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may get an additional benefit against dementia.brain2
Raising HDL (”good”) Cholesterol
Several studies have found that HDL positively influences mental performance. One theory: it may help block the formation of plaques in the brain. A 2008 study found that lower levels of HDL before age 60 increase the risk of memory loss in middle age as well as later in life.
Aspirin and Similar Drugs
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen) may help by reducing the chronic inflammation that plays a role in Alzheimer’s. But the picture remains muddy. While early research was promising, most clinical trials have yielded disappointing or conflicting results. However, studies have consistently found that low-dose aspirin does not help the brain.
Healthy Diet
A 2007 review of population studies concluded that a heart-healthy diet based on vegetables, fruits and whole grains is good for cognition and may well help protect against dementia–while a diet rich in saturated or trans fat may have a negative impact. It’s not known which nutrients or phytochemicals are most beneficial. Several recent studies have found a link between fish consumption and reduced risk of cognitive decline. A moderate alcohol intake has also been linked with better cognitive functioning and a reduced risk of dementia.
Dietary Supplements
There’s no solid evidence that vitamins or other supplements (including ginkgo and ginseng) or special “memory formulas” (such as Focus Factor) can prevent mental decline. Exception: a vitamin B12 deficiency can cause confusion and memory loss that can be misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s; large doses of B12 supplements, under a doctor’s supervision, may alleviate this.
Treating Depression
Not only does depression impair mental vitality, it can actually cause severe memory problems.
Bottom Line
Research into memory loss and dementia is intense, and hardly a week passes without some news. Memory problems and dementia often have multiple causes. Protecting your cardiovascular system, as outlined by many of the steps above, is probably your best bet for keeping your mind sharp and disease-free.

Women Smoking
What makes women smoke? There is no one reason perhaps she get mental disorders due to her extra emotional feelings, perhaps her husband, brother or father beats her daily for nothing except for pressurizing her to command them, perhaps she wants to live her own life but she was forced to live a life of terror and misery, perhaps she likes someone very handsome and charming but can not get through it or perhaps her sexual desires are killing her but she is restricted to get out them on any of the guy she likes.smoke1
If you are a girl, you have to be shy, you have to be delicate, and you have to be obedient of God. All these stresses with women sex desires can lead her to the drugs, smoking and alcohol addiction. Some women do smoking to control their sex desires. For the time being, they get satisfaction by inhaling the smoke of the cigarette but afterwards they are in the same condition again and they do not know that how much harm they are doing just to control their sexual desires.
It is bitter to hear but a true reality. Here we found a woman so week and helpless. But all the smoker women should think of their selves. If you are a woman and you are smoker than why you do not yourself the worth and best in the world. Your will power and determination will provide you freedom from all the stress and depression created by men for you in this society and it is you who can do something for yourself.
You will leave far behind in the race with men if you will let the cigarette become your companion. You are friend of yourself and your boy is the most important blessing on this earth for yourself. You have to manage your self. So quit smoking and rise again for yourself.
But on the other hand if we talk about the true reasoning and facts then there is some more surprising issue for women who smoke. Some women smoke for pleasure while some women just smoke because they are attracted to the smell of tobacco. Some women smoke to lose weight and some women smoke just in the gatherings of their girl friends.
smoke2These are the emotion free reasoning of why women smoke. The women needs more time to quit smoking than men because they have more will for smoking than men. Therapies usually do not work well for women smokers unless or until the therapy is arranged in the presence of psychiatrist.
Smoking has more bad effects on women than men. According to a survey, women have fifteen years less of life who smoke and men only have thirteen years. Women are at more risk because they have all the time hormonal changes and they are the one who have to give birth to the babies.
Being a woman it’s your responsibility to quit cigarette because you meant to be strong to face the world and health issues related to you.

Vitamin Guide
The Vitamins Guide has covered a variety of essential vitamins our bodies need and to conclude the series we’ll be ending with zinc, which is actually a mineral, but worth covering for its importance in body function as well.
Zinc is essential for growth and development throughout all of our life stages. It supports our immune system and is involved in the healing of our wounds along with helping to form proteins. If you don’t get enough zinc in your diet you could see the deficiency through hair loss, diminished appetite, slowed growth rate, diarrhea, and delayed wound healing.
Zinc deficiencies can occur from low dietary intake of foods high in zinc, from growth spurts specifically during puberty when the body needs more, or if it is poorly absorbed in the system. The recommended daily allowance is as follows:
• Female adults aged 19+ should have roughly 8 milligrams a day
• Male adults aged 19+ should have roughly 11 milligrams a day
• Females and Males aged 14-18 (typical growth spurt phase) should have between 9-11 milligrams
Getting zinc in your diet is relatively easy and is typically done through a daily multi-vitamin, but can also be done through eating foods rich in the mineral. The following foods are the best sources:
• Whole grains (as refined grains remove the elements of the grain that contains the zinc mineral)
• Beef
• Poultry (chicken/turkey)
• Shellfish
• Pumpkin seeds (good option for vegetarians)
This concludes the vitamin guide series. I hope you have found it helpful and are incorporating the foods suggested to help ensure you get the vitamins your bodies need to function at their most optimal level. You can reference all of the vitamin guides here:
Vitamin A
Vitamin A not only helps with vision but it is an antioxidant, which means that this substance can prevent damage to our bodies’ cells and also help with repairing damage. Additionally, vitamin A helps with maintaining our skin tissue and it is necessary for our cell growth. It also helps fight off infection, which in addition to the benefits listed above, makes vitamin A essential for our bodies.vitA
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. Fat-soluble means that it does not dissolve in water and therefore our bodies don’t tend to get rid of it through urine as we do with the water-soluble vitamins such as the B vitamins. This is important to note as too much vitamin A in the system can be toxic. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for men is 1000 micrograms and for women it is 800 micrograms per day. You should consult your doctor to ensure you are getting the amounts that are right for you.
The best sources for getting vitamin A in your diet are through vegetables and fruits that are deep orange and dark green in color such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, spinach, bok choy and mustard greens. When Vitamin A is obtained through these kinds of plant sources, it is referred to as beta-carotene, which then gets converted into vitamin A in the liver. Other good sources of this vitamin are milk, milk products and eggs.
Vitamin B12
B12 an essential vitamin needed for healthy nerve and blood cells as well as the production of DNA. A lack of B12 in the diet can cause anemia, which prevents the body from making normal red blood cells that carry oxygen in the blood. Anemia can leave you feeling tired and weak, if you have been feeling this way you should visit your doctor and have your B12 sections checked.vitB12
Vitamin B12 is a water–soluble vitamin, so you don’t have to worry about having too much in your system or risk of toxicity. Any amount of the vitamin your body does not need will be rid of through urine, unlike vitamin A as reviewed last week. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for the average adult is 2.4 micrograms per day. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should increase their daily allowance to 2.6-2.8 micrograms.
Animal foods are the primary source for getting B12 in your diet outside of utilizing supplementation. Meat, poultry, dairy foods and eggs are the main sources. If you are a vegetarian you could be lacking B12 as few foods such as cereals, meat substitutes and soy products have the vitamin fortified in it. Make sure to read the nutrition labels on the foods you purchase and otherwise speak to your doctor about a supplementation.
• 8oz. of yogurt contains 1.3mcg
• 3oz. of extra lean cooked beef contains 1.8mcg
• 1 serving of fortified cereal contains 1.5mcg
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential for our bodies as it helps with the formation of our bones, muscle, teeth and skin. It is also important to note that unlike most animals, we as humans do not have the ability to make our own vitamin C, and therefore must get it through our diet. Vitamin C helps with resistance to infection and with healing wounds, and in most recent research it has shown that vitamin C is useful in lowering cholesterol and fat levels in blood.vitC
Fruits and vegetables are the best sources for vitamin C; although I myself take a supplement as it ensures I get the right amount my body needs daily. Being that vitamin C may also protect against certain types of cancer and heart disease you should be sure to eat the following foods to get your daily dose:
• Peppers
• Oranges/Orange Juice
• Grapefruit
• Broccoli
• Kale
Examples of how to reach the daily dietary allowances, although you should check with your doctor to make sure you know your correct allowance, are as follows:
• Medium green or yellow peppers – 225mg/serving
• Medium orange – 80mg/serving
• Medium baked potato – 20mg/serving
Vitamin D
Want to keep your teeth and bones strong? Then you want to pay extra attention to vitamin D and ensure to have it in your daily diet. Vitamin D has also been shown to lower our risk for cancer, upwards of 150,000 cases according to Cedric Garland, a doctor vitDof public health. One of the best ways to get vitamin D is directly from sunlight; this is due to how our bodies produce the vitamin from the exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
With the increase in concern for skin cancers and wanting to protect our skin from sun damage and burning, the amount of sunscreen we utilize has caused our vitamin D levels to plummet. Deficiencies in vitamin D are most commonly muscular weakness and weak bones. The disease that we are mostly familiar with associated with vitamin D is osteoporosis, where an individual will have very fragile bones, which can result in bone fractures.
The recommended daily intake by the National Osteoporosis Foundation is 400-800 IU for adults younger than 50 and 800-1000 IU for adults older than age 50. You should talk to you doctor to understand what levels are best suited for you and can be tested to monitor those levels as well.vitDD
In addition to the sun being a great way to increase your vitamin D levels, food is also an ideal source. Examples are:
• Cooked salmon 3.5oz – 360 IU
• 1 whole egg – 25 IU
• Cooked mackerel 3.5oz – 345 IU
• Canned sardines 3.5oz – 270 IU
• Soy milk – 120 IU
You can also look for products such as juices and cereals that are fortified with vitamin D. While they won’t contain as much of the vitamin as whole foods, they will certainly help add to the levels needed by your body.
Vitamin E
vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that is an antioxidant and protects our body from free radicals. These free radicals can damage our cells and also cause cardiovascular disease, which is why it can be said that vitamin E is essential to maintaining a healthy heart and protecting against heart disease. As an additional benefit vitamin E is also effective in helping with the immune system.
Vitamin E is typically measured in milligrams and the recommended daily intakes are as follows:
• Men 19+ years of age = 15mg/daily
• Women 19+ years of age=15mg/daily
• Women who are breastfeeding= 19mg/dailyvitE
Check with your health care provider to determine how much vitamin E you need, especially if you are a woman who is expecting. According to a study recently done by the USDA, the intake of vitamin E by women aged 19-50 years was less than 90%, a number that can be improved upon with the following foods:
• 1oz Almonds – 8mg
• 1oz Sunflower oil – 14mg
• 1 tbsp Vegetable oil – 3mg
• 2 tbsp Peanut Butter – 3mg
• ½ Frozen Broccoli – 2mg
• 1 raw Mango – 1mg
In addition to the foods listed above, green leafy vegetables are also a good source, such as spinach. Please note that some foods lose a good amount of their vitamin E content when cooked, processed or even through storage. To help retain the vitamin amount use whole-grain flours and ensure foods are stored in airtight containers.

thumbnail.aspxCellulite is the name for bundles of fat stored between the muscle and skin. Muscle is attached to the skin through bands of fibrous connective tissue. Under the influence of time, gravity and hormones, the stored fat pushes against the connective tissue, compressing the skin and causing the appearance of dimples or puckers in the overlying skin.
While most forms of cellulite occur on the thighs and buttocks, in some people, it also occurs on the upper arm, the back of the neck, and stomach. In most people, the appearance of cellulite worsens with age. This does not mean, however, that younger people do not get cellulite. Indeed, cellulite often starts to develop at a young age. Left untreated, this condition worsens in appearance as the person ages.

As we age, it is normal for our bodies to change and adapt to our circumstances. Our skin begins to loosen, loosing the taut youthful look, our muscles reduce and our bones become brittle. We also tend to gain weight because we just cannot do the things we use to. One of the main problems we face in our age aside from wrinkles is cellulite. This can occur in both men and women but women seem to take more notice to it. Some women might look into cellulite Phoenix reduction treatment. Why wouldn’t they? It leaves butt, thighs and arms looking gelatinous and pock marked. Who wants to show off legs and arms that look like that? Plus, it is rarely seen in males being that it is thought to deal with hormone levels common in women. Most think that it is caused by being overweight but this is not the case. Under weight, people can also suffer from cellulite.
However, it is theorized that diet can be a factor. One thing is for certain, cellulite is a collection of fat cells that have stretched and risen to the surface of our skin giving it the mine field appearance and while there is no ‘cure’ for this, or proven medicine which will make it disappear there are procedures to help with the reduction. These procedures are listed as plastic surgery but are non-invasive and simple. Syneron, which is a laser procedure, integrates mechanical, light, heat, radio frequency energy together to apply to the skin. This procedure has shown to be effective after only a few times. The cosmetic industry also uses just radio frequency, which heats the skin and fat tissue underneath. This regenerates collagen in the area, which makes the skin look younger and more vital. There are other procedures as well but most have had inconclusive results. One of these procedures is masotherapy. In the end, however all of these procedures require follow-ups throughout your life to attain a lasting permanence to your results.
thumbnail.aspx1Some things to take note of when trying to get rid of these problem areas is that in the case of cellulite, dieting and liposuction do not work. In fact, liposuction can exacerbate the problem. The above procedures have been the only ones proven to be in any way effective and it is best if you use them. A non-invasive procedure such as this is a beneficial way to remove unwanted cellulite areas and it is not as expensive as one might think. If cellulite is really, a problem for you seriously consider having something done. You won’t be disappointed and if you have, the means take a trip to Phoenix.

cosmetic surgeryUntil the 1980s, most cosmetic surgeries were approached as multi-staged procedures done over a period of years. Middle-aged patients might have their eyelids done but would then be advised to defer a facelift until reaching their 60s. None of the “rejuvenation procedures” that are popular today even existed, and complications were so feared that patients would often have surgery on only one side of the face at a time, with several weeks between procedures.

Past and Present Trends In Cosmetic Surgery.

In recent years, there have been several major trends in cosmetic surgery. First, people are now having procedures done earlier, with whole-face rejuvenation done in multiple treatments. The second, even more dramatic trend is the use of high technology in cosmetic laser surgery, which is now performed in a surgeon’s own office or an outpatient surgery facility. There are social and economic trends at work, not just medical ones. The pressures of commercial life, of working to older ages and of women in their 40s succeeding the professional world all contribute to the popularity of cosmetic surgery. And it is well established that personal image and looks play a powerful role in the careers of professional people. Doctors now understand that among the various motivations for having cosmetic surgery earlier in life is some people’s need to secure their social and professional status.

Cosmetic Surgery Innovation

Clearly, it is not just the new technologies and procedures that are available that have changed the nature of cosmetic surgery. Greater knowledge about the human body and its construction (and its flexibility) has led to there being many, many proponents for the multiple procedure approach. Then, too, there is the matter of balance. Following facial rejuvenation, a patient’s face may look younger but other aspects of their physique and appearance may not match up.

On the other hand, a “whole-body” approach considers the entire person in the equation, which is why another new trend is cosmetic surgeons relying on help from psychologists, make-up artists and image consultants in developing patient plans. In other words, cosmetic surgery is trending toward being a “package deal” for the whole person.

As far as new procedures, there has been a great deal of change and progress in the use of “injectables,” and not just the famous Botox injections for wrinkle elimination. Various kinds of injectables have been developed to sculpt the human body in various ways and in various places. Used as part of an overall rejuvenation or reconstruction plan, along with other ever-advancing procedures like dermabrasion and cosmetic laser surgery, injectables have become an important part of the plastic surgeon’s toolkit.

Other technologies and procedures are continually evolving. Newer, more powerful and more accurate lasers are being developed and manufactured all the time, and advances in many medical fields—metallurgy, anesthesia, antibiotics, etc.—are rapidly adopted where needed by cosmetic surgeons.

Cosmetic Laser Surgery: Right For You?

Another major trend is that doctors are now performing cosmetic laser surgery and other procedures outside of the hospital atmosphere. Some plastic surgeons have their own outpatient surgery facilities, while others band together to form partnerships for this purpose. Procedures have become safer with advances in medical technology and doctors have learned to reduce complications to a fraction of a percent of all procedures.

This trend toward outpatient procedures has some very powerful unseen advantages. Leaving the hospital out of the equation has numerous benefits, beginning with an economic one.

It is far less expensive for the patient, who may have to consider cosmetic surgery financing options if unable to pay up front, if there is no hospital stay. In addition, the presence of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals is a good reason to avoid them if at all possible.

One other recent trend has been the good press that cosmetic surgery has been getting, compared to the negative portrayals of yesteryear and the casting of patients as “victims.” In fact, some doctors point to the television series “Extreme Makeover” as a reflection of a new appreciation for cosmetic surgery. The fact that the program also shows “everyday people” having these procedures, not just the Ivana Trumps of the world, is an indication of how cosmetic laser surgery and other life-enhancing procedures are considered not only acceptable, but affordable, as well.

GemsChristmas sales have brought sheen back to Indian gems and jewellery units with exports growing by about 55 per cent at $2.1 billion in November 2009 compared with the same period last year.
“We have got good orders for the festive season from western markets like the US and the EU,” Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) Chairman Basant Mehta said.
However, in April-November 2009, exports fell 1.02 per cent to $17.62 billion compared to the same period last fiscal, according to GJEPC data. Segments like coloured gemstones
and gold jewellery fell 20 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively. However, cut and polished diamonds registered healthy growth of 122 per cent. The exporters hoped the positive trend would continue, as there are signs of recovery in various economies resulting in improvement in inventories. The UAE is the main destination for India’s gems and jewellery, accounting for 31 per cent of the total exports, followed by Hong Kong and the US.

Women Flirtatious men have a better chance of attracting a woman when she is at her most fertile during her monthly cycle, research has suggested.
Evolutionary psychologist, Dr Edward Morrison, of the University of Portsmouth, asked a group of women to examine various facial expressions. He found when the women were ovulating they preferred flirtatious expressions. Dr Morrison said: “If we wanted to attract someone at the Christmas party, flirting effectively may help.” He added: “An ability to ‘read’ and interpret the facial expressions and an awareness of what you are signaling with your own expressions could improve your chances of successful flirting. “It is difficult to define what constitutes flirtatiousness and much of it may be something we perceive without even realizing it.” But it seems that in the absence of other cues, the ’social properties’ of facial movement influences how we judge attractiveness.”
As part of the study, published in Archives of Sexual Behavior, researchers produced several animated facial models which were rated on a flirtatiousness scale by 16 women. Then a separate group of 47 women were asked which of them they found most attractive by rating them on a scale of one to seven. By measuring their level of movement in their faces, researchers revealed that most of the women preferred the faces that were more animated. They also concluded that women recognize specific “mating-relevant” social cues. However, Dr Morrison added: “Science is still a long way from discovering the magic formula for what women find attractive in a man.”

The sense of touch is more sensitive among women than men because their fingers are smaller, a study suggests. Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, found greater sweat pore density in smaller fingers. The fingertip touch receptors, which cluster around sweat pore bases, were therefore more tightly packed, they told the Journal of Neuroscience.
Higher sensitivity could improve the ability to perform tasks such as embroidery or surgery, they said. The researchers pressed progressively narrower parallel grooves against the stationary fingertips of 100 volunteers. Those with smaller fingers, and these tended to be the women, could discern tighter grooves. The index finger is more sensitive than the little finger – but lead researcher Dr Daniel Goldreich said this could be because sensitivity improves with continued use. He now plans to research whether children have more sensitive fingers than adults.
Dr Andy Bremner, of Goldsmiths, University of London, who has studied touch in children, said: “It could be that children find touch a particularly informative sense because it is a more sensitive modality for them due to their smaller hands and bodies. ”Parents and teachers may have to think twice before saying things like ‘Look, but don’t touch’.” But Dr Tiffany Field, of the Touch Research Institute at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine, said the findings could be the result of women’s skin being softer than men’s and arranged slightly differently at the cellular level.
Dr Mark Paterson, a social scientist at the University of Exeter who has been studying the role of touch, said: “This study looks at one particular type of touch receptor, but touch involves a number of receptor types working together.”If we can understand more, it could lead to better modeling of virtual touch.” It could, for example, lead to better simulations allowing online shoppers to “touch and feel” the fabrics of clothes displayed on websites, he added.
